Round up for charity: how it works and what to compare it with
Spare-change giving is one of the easiest ideas to explain. Here's how it works, where it falls short, and another way to tie giving to everyday spending.
How round-up giving works
A supporter links a debit or credit card to a round-up app or program. Each purchase is rounded up to the next dollar (a $4.35 coffee becomes $5.00), and the 65 cents of "change" is collected and donated, usually in a monthly batch. Some checkout counters offer a similar one-time "round up your total for charity" button.
What nonprofits like about it
- Easy to explain in one sentence.
- Gifts are small, so supporters barely notice them.
- Once set up, it runs on its own.
Where it falls short
- It's still the supporter's money. Every round-up is an extra charge on their card. For families already being asked a lot, that matters.
- Setup can be a hurdle. Linking a bank card to a new app is a big ask for some people.
- Fees and caps vary. Read each provider's terms on processing fees and monthly limits.
- No local connection. The round-up happens wherever they shop, so it does nothing to involve local businesses.
An alternative: let local businesses share instead
NectarPay Community Share ties giving to the same everyday purchases, but the support comes from the participating business's side of the sale. Supporters use a free wallet branded for your nonprofit, and 8% of each purchase at participating local businesses goes back to your cause. Supporters also earn POP (Proof of Participation) points, which recognize participation and have no cash value.
| Round-up giving | Community Share | |
|---|---|---|
| Who pays the gift | The supporter (extra on each purchase) | 8% of the purchase at a participating business goes back |
| Where it works | Anywhere the card is used | Participating local businesses |
| Local business involvement | None | Built in |
| Supporter recognition | Varies by app | POP points (no cash value) |
